OK, I understood the "guest host" thing at first. Seth Green made sense since he's a well-known wrestling fan. Even Shaquille O'Neal's appearance was awesome comic relief considering his "match" with Show could've been a Wrestlemania "moneymaker gimmick match" in a parallel universe.
But Bob Barker? ZZ Top? AL SHARPTON? Whatever the WWE writing staff has been smoking lately must have destroyed their brain cells and rotted their intellects.
Raw's catered to younger audiences lately, but why bother having guest hosts that baby boomers only know of? Or maybe they're plotting another "Adamle conspiracy" where the only way of getting ratings will be through people expecting the absolute worst show in history every Monday?
WHO CARES about seeing d-list celebrities get pounded by wrestlers or interacting with Santino Marella on a weekly basis. If the ratings are THAT bad, why not try the tried and true formula of going back to basics and giving us great wrestling and compelling, non-flamboyant angles?
TNA isn't much better. In fact, it's just as bad and as Wrestlecrap-worthy as WCW was in 2000 and 2001 (all fingers point to you, Mr. Russo). This recession isn't only affecting our economy but the quality of wrestling we're getting on television at the moment. Forget ROH exists for a moment. Their show on HDNet certainly has great-quality matches, sure, but it's a regional promotion that doesn't have quite the cult following that ECW did, despite what every internet fan tells you.
Maybe it's just the lack of competition involved. If TNA or ROH had talent that could draw, combined with amazing wrestling and captivating angles, yes, WWE may just get off its ass and produce something worth watching that isn't named "ECW" or "Wrestlemania" (and those of you that saw WM25 know that even the latter is up in the air at this point).
I'm proud (or disappointed?) to say that I've watched nothing but older wrestling the past few months thanks to Classics on Demand and my library of older wrestling tapes and DVD's. Nothing WWE does on Raw or Smackdown, despite CM Punk's push and ECW's rising stars, makes me want to watch. And that has to change. Quickly.
