MAUI, HAWAII: He has proven he has what it takes to take his body to its limit on multiple occasions. His unrivaled intensity and will has rewarded him with the longest undefeated streak in the URWL today. But what also separates URWL Hardkore Champion Akina from the rest of his coworkers is his compassion.
Only a two-year pro in the wrestling industry, Akina, in his mid-twenties, has shown the heart of someone twice his age, something that has garnered the respect of many of the veterans he shares the locker room with. The feeling is reciprocated, especially toward a veteran that helped put Akina where he is today: Scorpion.
After working a URWL house show at Oracle Arena in Oakland, California, Akina sat down with us and explained why. "I respect Scorpion. I respect what he's done for this company, how he's stood up to adversity over his career and how he always seems to bring his A-Game in every one of his matches. The match we had at Digital Mayhem 2008 was the toughest experience of my life...Scorp never let up for a second, even when I thought he was seriously injured. I've learned a lot from him in the three matches we've had, and at Episode 9, I want him to realize how much I've picked up. He's done an awful lot for my career, whether he realizes it or not."
But how mutual is this feeling? Scorpion was unavailable for comment, but Akina believes Scorpion is now only beginning to see the light. "After Popular Demand, Scorpion's probably feeling like the world around him is crashing down...ever since CobrA, the brother he trained and brought into the wrestling business turned his back on him. I don't think he deserved what happened to him. Inside the ring, in Episode 9, I'll be his opponent. But outside the ring, I'll be there for him...because he didn't deserve to have that happen to him in Los Angeles."
Akina expects Episode 9's match will be a contest of mutual respect. However, what Scorpion thinks remains to be seen...
