All right, the worst kept secret in the wrestling industry was finally revealed Tuesday night on ECW (of all programs)...Jay Reso has signed a contract with the WWE.
Wrestling fans expected him to come back at the Royal Rumble, helping his "brother" Edge out against Jeff Hardy. But that was not to be, as Matt Hardy turned on his brother and set up an inevitable Wrestlemania showdown. Vince and I were wondering, "if not now, when?"
Enter Tuesday. Jack Swagger is on the mic, speaking about how he's going to eat Finlay's children at No Way Out. Speaking of children, he wants to get at Finlay by calling out Vince McMaho...I mean FINLAY's son himself, Hornswoggle. The fans, between yawns and bathroom breaks, start to boo. What the hell is Jacky Boy thinking, calling out a midget?
The camera pans to the entranceway. Matt Striker is disgusted. All of a sudden, out of nowhere comes the Face of Peep Nation Himself on the jumbotron. A remixed version of "Just Close Your Eyes", sans female vocals, hits. The LEDs below the titantron spoil the inevitable: Christian's Back!
The fans don't know what to do. In fact, I don't know if I even hear cheering at all. Out comes Christian, and the fans start recognizing him. Grisham and Striker freak out, but not like one would expect an announcer (Jim Ross, anyone) to freak out. The cheering gets a bit louder, but nothing spectacular. And into the ring he goes, saving Swagger's aimless promo and little Horny in the process.
What followed was the worst return promo in wrestling history. I mean, c'mon, he's Captain Charisma on the mic, but this was just horrible...even Chris Jericho's meandering promo against Randy Orton from a year ago was better than this:
Shuffering Shuckotash indeed.
OK, later on that night, Swagger and Christian have a non-title main event match with Finlay at ringside, hyping the No Way Out match throughout. Christian gets the win! The fans cheer! Cut to black.
All right, folks. How much more anticlimactic can you get? Sure, it was unexpected, sure, it was markout city, sure, it was great to see...but honestly...couldn't WWE have waited until No Way Out to do this? Having Christian appear after the Finlay/Swagger match would have been much more memorable than a pretty weird promo and run-of-the-mill match on WWECW.
Oh, well, at least TJ Wilson debuted as "Tyson Kidd" that night...
