ESPN NFL 2K5 is still the best football game ever made, no matter what anyone here or anywhere else says. EA, since the time they bought the exclusive rights for the National Football League (and made Madden the only game in town), has not made a Madden game on the level of 2K5. It's embarrassing, but it's true.
Madden 09 looked to me like a return to form for the series, a game that could rival 2K5, but after the first night or so, the feeling of new-ness just wore off.
EA's strongest football series is the NCAA Football series, since the gameplay has always been tighter and faster in order to match the speed of NCAA football. I, honestly, have not played an AMAZING Madden game since Madden 2001 on PS2 (one of the best football games ever made).
EA doesn't care about the Madden series. They can make the same game every year and it'll sell an absolute shitload of copies. Why bother making a groundbreaking, exciting, and fresh football title? They have no competition anymore. Kinda like THQ with the SVR games. They know they have the biggest game in town, so why go the extra mile?

Tecmo Super Bowl > Every other football game. >.> That game made even more fun with a hack program that changes the team names and player stats. My friend and I have two teams we used that are basically the 2008 Lions with staggering mental problems. Both QBs average about 4 INTs a game (and for 20 fast minutes of football that's a lot), and roughly every 5th pass is widely overthrown or off target. Good times to be had.
