LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: The URWL roster and production staff has already begun pre-production and preparation for Popular Demand 2008 at Los Angeles's Staples Center. But outside the ring, the wrestling media has already weighed in on the event and, more specifically, the show's main event between URWL Champion Jaime Emo and new #1 Contender Seth Stern.
This news, though, may not be good for the URWL Champion. Wrestling analysts from around the Internet Wrestling Community, for example, are predicting that Jaime Emo's chances to retain are slim against Seth Stern.
Dan Treadwell, lead blogger at URWLWatch.net, a URWL fan site, says Emo may be in for one of the toughest matches of his career against Stern at Popular Demand. "No matter what gimmick the fans choose, Stern is going to give Emo the proverbial 'run for his money' at Popular Demand. Seth is one match away from proving that he's the world's best young talent. This may just be that match. Sorry, Jaime, but you're a transitional champion."
John Hurst, writer at ProWrestlingPredictions.com, is also skeptical about Emo's wrestling skills as Champion. "At Digital Mayhem, Emo beat !nterogative, a man whose only advantages over Jaime were his size, strength and power. Not only did Emo outlast each, he was able to exploit !nterogative's limited technical ability for the win. Seth Stern is nearly equal to Jaime Emo in terms of speed, size and technical ability, so it's going to be much harder for Jaime to sustain an advantage over Seth for an extended period of time. Add to that the fact that Stern's been emphasizing his distaste after losing at Asphyxiation 2007, and we could be seeing a much more spirited challenger. Seriously, now that Emo's champion, can't we get rid of all the 'heart and determination' bullshit he's been talking about? Stern becomes the youngest URWL Champion in history after Popular Demand. He deserves it."
Another Stern supporter, Mike Frechette, staff writer at RASSLINATION.com, agrees with Hurst about Emo's approach to this match on the microphone. "Emo's always been more about wrestling than talking, but ever since he's been Champion, he's done nothing to really vault himself over his competition. Seth's mad as hell, and, well...he isn't gonna take it anymore. I, personally, have had enough of Emo's rousing speeches about 'truth, justice and the American way'. Leave that to the man in the red cape and do your job as Champion. Get in the ring and prove it. Because Seth Stern just may be fighting for something more important."
Despite all the news of a possible Stern win, Emo supporters around the IWC aren't giving up hope. Jacques Trepanier, writer of the URWL column at WrestleCanada.ca, says that Stern's impressive return hasn't decreased Emo's chances to pull a win off. "Emo understands the concept of the 'big match'. He's demonstrated it time and time again...just watch his performances at Discontent and Digital Mayhem against !nterogative. He was not only able to handle his opponent but was able to show the world he was a worthy contender. That shouldn't change come Popular Demand. His familiarity with Stern in the ring should be a tremendous asset, since they've met in three singles matches and an tag team elimination match in Episode 7. He won't be a transitional champion because his poise is simply too high for Stern to anticipate. Sure, he may be fighting for his reputation in the ring with Emo, but I wouldn't say he's a shoo-in for Champion simply on his mental state. Emo's proved he's worthy of the Championship and should show the world that he aims to be a Champion of substance."
The wrestling media may have their choices, but come Popular Demand, only one man will emerge with platinum around their waist.
