Here's a thread where you can judge my commentary anytime you'd like.
After I started the URWL on YouTube up last November, I was originally apprehensive of doing commentary. You could tell, from the first match, I was trying to do an "announcer" voice and use my own voice, but try an animated fashion. Since the first episode, I've definitely become more comfortable in front of the microphone, and I'm now trying to make the commentary seem more legitimate and less cliche and habit-forming.
You'll notice that I have similar speech patterns in my commentary. It used to be those dreaded words "believe me", and now it's "now...(wrestler name)...what's gonna happen here? (move)!!!!" or "(wrestler name)...looking for it...(move!)". It's stuff I need to improve. However, I'm trying to adopt a "move-by-move" style and move away from the WWE style of commentary (talking about angles during matches), as seen in Episode 4 and Discontent.
My main commentary influence is Joey Styles (in the original ECW), who revolutionized and was the true innovator of the one-man booth in wrestling. His commentary was never boring, and I prefer him working without a color man. He just announces matches like no one else has. I've also been influenced by Jim Ross, Gorilla Monsoon and Tony Schiavone, basically since I've grown up watching them. The biggest influence on me is Rick Jeanerett, play-by-play man for the Buffalo Sabres. I grew up listening to him and his style is unmistakable, with the most energy I've ever seen in a hockey commentator his age.
And, as for my voice cracking at times and my intense enthusiasm, watch an extreme match of ECW. Joey Styles makes some potentially humiliating voices sometimes, but it adds a lot to his matches. It gives the sick bumps and high-risk moves more impact, it seems. That's what I'm gunning for.
So, long story short, what do you guys think of my commentary? Where does it need improvement? What do you think I should focus on?
