As we've always done for every event just about to air here on the Rantboard, let's break down the biggest stories surrounding the pilot episode of URWL LIVE.
A Long-Awaited Return
Buffalo, New York's First Niagara Center hosts the long-promoted return of the URWL after the announcement that the HighStakes and Rush events would be merged into URWL LIVE. The event features each of the five matches originally booked for the HighStakes premiere, with the fallout of SWF Dark Horizon and the turmoil surrounding the Rantboard Network looming heavily above its proceedings.
Rally Star, Commander Open Event
After his out-of-nowhere victory at Road to URWL Rebirth, Rally Star became a polarizing, controversial figure overnight. The Commander, who won the first match of the URWL virtual wrestling era, is looking to repair his tarnished reputation after his feud with "Russian" Champion Aleksandar Kuleshov ended in disappointment.
Commander undoubtedly has the technicality and experience to shut down the boisterous rookie, though Star's over-the-top flamboyance and ambiguous sexuality is enough to give the rookie a major psychological advantage. Regardless of the outcome, this match is certain to be one of the biggest opening matches of Season 3.
Gash, Dragon and Chimera Battle for a Shot at the HighFlyer #1 Contendership
At Road to URWL Rebirth, text-era veteran Dark Dragon returned with a massive impact, making quick work out of debuting HighFlyer Darius Gash. On the other hand, Gash showed tremendous promise and seems to have a bright future in the HighFlyer Division. Both men may be familiar with one another, but the third man in this standard three-way match could be its wildcard: debuting Japanese super junior Shingo "Chimera" Matsubara.
Chimera's fast-paced attack wowed audiences in Japan, but will it be enough for Chimera to overtake two equally talented opponents? Unlike recent multi-wrestler URWL matches, the first pinfall or submission wins. The winner faces Victor Cordaro for the chance to claim the #1 Contendership of Trent Tail's HighFlyer Title.
Blood and Spectre Collide in a Clash of Original URWL Members
Text-era mainstay Spectre made a surprise return to the URWL at Unrivaled Ambition. Blood, the first text-era URWL Champion, is an established virtual wrestling era force and former North American Champion. Both are two of the original five URWL members from the year 2000. In what's shaping up to be a no-nonsense brawl, Spectre and Blood look to stake their claim as the better man.
Suicida and MacDonald Look to Claim a #1 Contender's Shot Against Cyberpunk
In the first Women's Main Event in URWL history, Hija Suicida debuted with one of the biggest upsets of Season 3, defeating former Women's Champion The Cyberpunk with a unique "Luchadora Americana" style.
In the opposite corner, Kelsey MacDonald's struggling career may have new life after associating herself with URWL Tag Team Champions The Great White North. This affiliation, however, came with a price: an attack at the hands of E.O.E. member Carl Load in Episode 9 of URWL Wrestling. With this heinous attack behind her, will Kelsey find an opportunity to get back into the title picture, or will Suicida find herself in a #1 Contendership rematch with the woman she previously defeated?
Barry White and Aleksandar Kuleshov Unify Internet Title, "Russian" Championship in Massive Main Event
Past meets future in the present as former 18-Time URWL Champion and current Internet Champion Barry White faces Season 2 Most Outstanding Rookie and currently undefeated "Russian" Champion Aleksandar "AK47" Kuleshov. With a record of 7-0, opponents can not find an answer for the unorthodox kickboxer and former mixed martial artist.
Hope, however, rests in the hands of the 18-Time URWL Champion who, after initially struggling against the new influx of URWL talent, has won his last three singles matches. After suffering another attack at the hands of Shane B. Perkins following Unrivaled Ambition, it's plain to see the "new generation" is a thorn in White's side. Though if there's anyone on the roster who can handle such an unpredictable talent like Kuleshov, it's White --- despite being a step slower than he used to be, his proficiency and big match performance can not be denied.
Will Kuleshov's streak come to an end as his "Russian" Championship is forever retired? Or will the Rookie of the Year have the poise to defeat the final URWL Internet Champion and become the URWL's elite technician? All will be decided on Episode 1 of URWL LIVE.
Episode 1's final post date will be announced this week! Stay tuned to the Rantboard Network forums, Twitter and Facebook accounts for all the details as they become available.
