I have been doing some research for the RPW and making the jump to HD recording. There are many products available and I know about a few of them but I am looking for some personal advice from you fellas. Right now, I am using this: Egalto Link
It works great. I play the game directly on my Macbook Pro. There is no lag what so ever. The only thing that sucks about it is I am using the S-video and the quality isn't great. It says it can do 720p but that's pushing it I'd say probably 480p at best. I know all about this: Hauppauge Link
But I have a few questions about the Happauge. Does it work for Apple products? All the reviews I have read about it are by PC owners. My macbook does not have a an HDMI in so would this be a good option for me? Does anybody use or know anything about this product: Elgato HD LinkI have heard mixed reviews about this one. Some reviews on newegg.com say that after about 4 minutes of gameplay there is serious lag in the sound. Anybody have a personal experience with this? Outside of these products I don't really know what options I have. I know there is a way to record using Apple TV, but from what I have read it can be problematic because it uses home wifi. I turn to you RBN Community members... What do you use? What should I use? Thoughts? Opinions? Any and all responses will be welcomed.

I use the older model of the Hauppauge HD PVR for capturing footage from the Xbox 360. It's a decent capture device but I've heard that with the Elgato HD you can also record PC footage using it, which would be great for me.

Basically my birthday is coming up this weekend and I'd like to treat myself to a present.

I use an AverMedia device. It works pretty well. Big draw is I don't have to have it hooked up to my computer. I just plug in my external hard drive, play and record, and then unplug and plug the hard drive into my computer to pull the files. As far as I know though, it can only do up to 720 on component cables, though there MAY be a version that uses HDMI... don't quote me on that though.

I use an internal capture device named the Black Magic Intensity Pro ( link). There is an external version call the Intensity Shuttle. Both let you record through HDMI up to 1080i and records in pretty good quality. It's what I use for PFW and other video game stuff. The only downsides will probably be price, they're both $200 and atleast with the Intensity Pro you will need to get an HDMI splitter to continue watching gameplay on your television. If you don't mind watching your gameplay through your monitor, then it's a good buy.

I actually found these links helpful too. From what I have heard, do not use Roxio and be prepared to compress your files if you do not have space on your computer. Speaking of file size, I just wanted to ask the people who have capture cards, Elgato HD owners more specifically, how big are the raw files? Is it the same deal as FRAPS where you see yourself getting 1GB files after about a minute of recording. I use FRAPS for my show and the file sizes are gigantic. If anybody could give me a rough estimate of how big the files are when you record and if you compress the files, what software do you use? It would be much appreciated.

Well, while recording in the .m2ts file using the Hauppauge HD PVR device, I get around 1GB for a 10 minute raw video file in 720p. Never really tested recording with .mp4 though. As far as Elgato HD goes, I'm not entirely sure but perhaps it could be around those numbers as well.

I will likely stick with Elgato, but this is a lot more encouraging for me now.

I went with the Elgato HD Capture Card!
Watch a difference!
Test Match:
There is still some settings to be messed with but I am very happy with it so far.

That looks pretty good so far, Jay! I'd just recommend besides trying to find the best device/project/render settings, would be working on the levels/contrast of the video. It helps bringing up brighter colors a lot.

Yeah honestly it is, HD files are much much larger than SD video. That's why most editing rigs contain multiple 1TB+ HDDs for use as scratch disks.

Looks like this guy has never used FRAPS.
If you think thats bad, recording a 2 minute video on full screen will take that much of space!
You could always compress it if you want.

I am going to shoot for no compression.
I'd rather have it take an really long time to upload to youtube than go back to my standard definition capture device.
I have already started working on the next episode of Redline and I am already addicted to the HD format!

I really liked how the HD made everything look. Hopefully soon, I'll be able to do shows in HD as well. I've been trying to look into the best device to use and this really helped out a lot in my decision.

Nice HD. It really IS a huge step... and you'll never want to go back. Just the detail you'll be able to see on your guys and arenas now is ridiculous. They start looking like real people. Looking forward to the first HD Redline. :-D

I use an internal capture device named the Black Magic Intensity Pro ( link). That's exactly what I use on my Mac Pro. Amazing quality in 1080p and really good compression while capturing in the Apple ProRes codec. Can't ask for anything more, honestly, totally worth every penny.

Had to upgrade my PC a bit to keep up with it but as you already said, great quality and compression when recording up to 1080p. I however stop around 1080i and save my edited files in 720p. Recording at 1080i isn't my choice it more the choice of the HDMI splitter lol.
