In preparation for the re-debut of URWL HighStakes (which is now next on the agenda after CAW[n]spiracy), I want to share a recent discovery I made on my hard drive. These were written angle and match results by a former UNW member who helped me with show writing back in the later days of the league. Since these were written around June 2003, these were from around the time the UNW (as you know, the URWL's final text iteration) closed in the summer of that year.
Because I foolishly deleted the rest of the events after I ended the league --- one of my life's biggest regrets, honestly --- I don't have the complete event this portion comes from. But it was interesting for me to read and brought back many memories of events, names and personalities I didn't quite remember, including Merle Haggard Jr.'s younger protege, Billy Backus (who resembled Merle a bit too much for me to consider making him as a CAW).
Enjoy. Again, these were not written by me, but by a text-era member who helped me with the show-writing process.
Segment Before Adrenalin vs Backus match.
Adrenalin sits in his locker room psyching himself up for his match against Backus, when in bursts the ref for the match, Abrams Peterson.
Merle Haggard Jr: Bad idea there Peterson, that’s not going to sit too well with Adrenalin, I would not want to be Peterson right now.
Kurt Ross: Adrenalin is going to be pretty worked up as it is right now, with two matches tonight, one of them being an important match, against Fusion in the North American title tournament. We will also be seeing Backus twice tonight, when he faces off with CobrA in the same tournament. Both matches are only the first round, but I can bet the Adrenalin vs Fusion one will be brutal. They really don’t get on.
Merle Haggard Jr: I would bet on one man being seriously hurt in that match, and it’s not even a No DQ match like the one they had at Spring Breakdown this past week!
Adrenalin: What do you want Peterson, make it quick!
Peterson: I just came into say, I want a clean match against Backus tonight, nothing illegal.
Adrenalin: Ok, but now leave.
Adrenalin starts to pound himself in the head just before he gets up and walks out his locker room.
Over to Backus, and we see him walking down the corridor, getting ready for his first match in the UNW.
Kurt Ross: Here is Backus, I don’t really know what we are about to see of this man, it is his debut here in the UNW.
Merle Haggard Jr: He is a proud Texan, so he isn’t going to take this lying down, just look at his Hat! “Don’t Mess With Texas!”
Kurt Ross: Looks like we are about to start here!
--------------
Match 2: Adrenalin vs Backus
(The arena is silent, and then, suddenly, the lights dim down. The opening guitar riff of "In A Gadda Da Vida" by Iron Butterfly hits. The fans roar into a booing frenzy, as the 6’8”, 365 pound Adrenalin bursts through the curtains. He walks down the ramp snarling at the booing fans that line it. He slides into the ring, and climbs a turnbuckle, shouting at the fans. He gets don, and stares at the ref.)
Andy Mace: Now in the ring, weighing in at 365 lbs, the Soviet Wonder, Adrenalin!
(Adrenalin walks over to the opposite turnbuckle and begins to shout and pound his chest once more. The fans show a real dislike to this)
Merle Haggard Jr: The fans really don’t like this guy, and I don’t understand why at all, he is a true athlete, he is a class act, wouldn’t you say so Kurt?
Kurt Ross: I don’t think we have seen him win a match truly here in the UNW yet, so we will see tonight hopefully what he can do.
(“My Town” by Montgomery Gentry sounds round the arena, and the fans rise and begin to chant “Backus, Backus, Backus…” as he walks down the ramp. He slaps some of the hands of the fans at the side of the ramp, before sliding in the ring.)
Andy Mace: Now entering the ring, weighing in at 258 lbs, at a height of 6’5”, making his debut here in the UNW, The High Life Man, Billy Backus!
(Backus walks around the ring, taunting for the crowd, before the music stops, and the ref signals for the bell)
(The bell rings, and Adrenalin goes straight to work with a powerful clothesline that floors Backus straight away. Backus rolls over, and begins to get up, as Adrenalin grabs him by the head, picks him up, and floors him again with a Thunderous punch to the head. The ref wasn’t happy with that, and tells him to use the forearm.)
Kurt Ross: This man sure is powerful, he will want this match out the way as quick as possible to give himself a chance later tonight, even though Fusion does have two matches as well, he will probably look to do the same thing.
Merle Haggard Jr: I told you before, Adrenalin is a class act athlete, course this match will be over quickly, what are you saying Kurt?
(Adrenalin picks up Backus, and raises him high above his head with ease. He chucks him over the ropes, and Backus lies on the floor outside the ring, almost motionless. The ref begins the 10 count, 1, 2, 3, 4… Backus begins to move but he still has to get into the ring. 5, 6, 7, Backus gets up to the Apron but is knocked down quickly by Adrenalin with a running forearm smash. The ref once again to the disappointment of many of the fans, begins to start the count again, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. Adrenalin rolls out the ring on the 9, making referee Abrams Peterson start the count again. Adrenalin ignoring the refs requests to get it back in the ring, picks up Backus, puts him in the bear hug position, and rams Backus’s back into the ringside barriers, putting Backus through a lot of pain. Adrenalin picks up and rolls Backus into the ring. Backus pushes the ref back by accident as he gets back up, and turns round towards Adrenalin. Backus hits him with a low blow, which floors the Ukrainian Adrenalin momentarily. Backus and Adrenalin begin to get up, and Adrenalin gets up first and hits the first punch, Backus strikes back with a right hand blow to the head, but Adrenalin goes for that clothesline again straight away and almost takes Backus’ head off. Adrenalin picks him up, and sets up for the Soviet Drop. Smash, Backus’ head hits the ring canvas with authority from Adrenalin. Adrenalin covers Backus, 1, 2, 3. The ref signals for the bell, and raises the arm of Adrenalin.)
Andy Mace: The Winner of this match by pinfall, the Soviet Wonder, ADRENALIN!
-----------------------------
Segment Before CobrA vs Backus
CobrA is seen sitting in the back, when he is confronted by Backus. Backus explains that he may have just lost his last match, but he was saving his thoughts for the match about to come up.
Backus: CobrA, I may have just lost, but my thoughts were on the match that we are about to have. I am not to be taken lightly, I am the High Life Man, Billy…Backus! DON’T MESS WITH TEXAS!
CobrA: That’s all very nice there, but you know what, what’s about to happen is that your record here in the UNW will go from, Matches 1, Wins 0, Losses 1 to Matches 2, Wins 0… I think you can fill in the rest there, Backus. Let me leave you with that thought.
Fusion walks by the two when he hears what is happening. He sticks in a comment to both men.
Fusion: Guys, for all I care, both of you could win, and it wouldn’t make a difference to me, because I will go on to face Wes Tomerka for the UNW North American Title. I will prove tonight, that I am too intelligent, too fast, and too powerful. Watch and learn later tonight!
As Fusion walks off, Backus and Cobra stare at Fusion before going back to take one last glance at their opponent for the next match. Backus walks off and leaves Cobra to carry on getting ready for the match. The cameras fade out to a commercial.
Match 4: Billy Backus vs. CobrA
(For the second time in the night the crowd rise as the music of Backus flies around the arena. "My Town" by Montgomery Gentry, Backus walks down the ramp, slides into the ring, and taunts for the crowd. But he is showing some tiredness after the brawl of a match he had against Adrenalin earlier tonight.)
Andy Mace: Entering the ring, Weighing in at 258 lbs, the High Life Man, Billy Backus!
Kurt Ross: Backus must be tired after the match he had earlier tonight with The Ukrainian Adrenalin.
(Clips of the match show: The slam into the ring barriers and the Soviet Drop.)
Merle Haggard Jr: Adrenalin really took it out on him, and I think this may affect his chances in this match greatly, although he seemed very confident earlier on when he confronted CobrA.
Kurt Ross: Fusion interrupted the guys though, and stirred things up a lot thought, maybe he is plotting to make sure both these men are battered and bruised for a future match, where Fusion may face CobrA or Backus, if he manages to get past Adrenalin later tonight.
(As the music ends, “Stupid Girl” by Cold hits the PA system, and the crowd rise for the entrance of Cobra.)
Andy Mace: Making his way to the ring, weighing in at 200 lbs, One half of the UNW Tag Team Champions, CobrA!
Kurt Ross: CobrA hasn’t had another match tonight, and so he has an advantage, he should go for the high impact moves fast, and get this match done and dusted. We will be seeing CobrA's partner later tonight, Scorpion, when he faces Victor Cordaro for the UNW Hardkore Title!
Merle Haggard Jr: We will have to wait and see what goes on here though, I can’t see Backus pulling it off either.
(The bell rings once referee Abrams Peterson signals for it and the two start walking round the ring slowly, waiting for one to make the first move. The lock up, and CobrA gets the best of Backus when he hits a Snap suplex.)
Kurt Ross: CobrA singling out the back of Backus early on in the match with that fast paced snap suplex.
Merle Haggard Jr: Backus hurt his back in his first match of the night with Adrenalin, and it seems to show that it is still bad.
(CobrA walks over and picks up Backus, and whips him towards the ropes, he comes back and there is a Leg Lariat for Backus’ head to meet.)
Kurt Ross: This is an important match, this is the UNW North American Title Tournament, and both competitors will want to progress here, but Backus, as I have said already, seems to be at a disadvantage.
(CobrA now waits for Backus to get up, and he measures him up, and gives him a jumping calf kick right to the jaw. He picks him up, and hits the snap suplex, putting more pressure on that back of Backus. He picks him up once more, whips him into the turnbuckle, and sets up the Mexican Stretch, the back of Backus being put under more pressure here. The Ref is asking if Backus wants to give up, as he can’t tap because CobrA is holding his hands to his ankles. Backus says no t giving up, and CobrA releases him, and stands back.)
Kurt Ross: This is a match being dominated by CobrA, we will be right back after this!
(The cameras fade out to a commercial, as the match has slowed up a bit.)
Kurt Ross: Welcome back and during the break we saw this…
(The cameras split into two and show what happened.)
Kurt Ross: As you can see, CobrA hit 3 powerful turnbuckle dropkicks to the back of Backus, leaving him in extreme pain.
Merle Haggard Jr: They have left Backus in pain, I really cant see him coming back from this one now, it is all down to Adrenalin why this is happening, and CobrA has really picked that out.
(The cameras go back to the main match where CobrA is going for another turnbuckle dropkick when the ref moves in to check on Backus, and gets the dropkick from CobrA to the face. CobrA tries to help the ref, but he is really groggy. Backus crawls over, and hits another low blow, like the one from the previous match against Adrenalin. As both wrestlers and the ref are on the floor, the crowd turn their heads to the ramp, where Fusion is seen standing at the top of the ramp. He walks down the ramp, and walks over to the commentary area. He sits down and helps out with guest commentary.)
Fusion: Hey boys, just came down to get a closer view of what’s going on, and I have come to the conclusion that this Backus is a con-man, that obviously tricked people into thinking he was any good, because so far, what he has shown me, is that he can low blow, and that’s all, how pathetic, he doesn’t deserve to be in this tournament….wait here, I have an idea.
(Fusion gets up and grabs the UNW Tag Team Championship belt of CobrA's, and climbs into the ring. He clobbers Backus with the belt, but the Ref saw it and he calls for the bell.)
Andy Mace: The winner of this match due to Outside Interference...Billy Backus!
(Fusion smiles, and walks out the ring, and CobrA hangs on the 2nd rope, looking towards Fusion, doing some trash talking.)
Kurt Ross: Fusion really didn’t want CobrA in the tournament, did he?
Merle Haggard Jr: I hope that was a rhetorical question Kurt, because that was pretty obvious before the title shot to the head.
(The cameras fade out to another commercial break.)
--------------------------------
Segment For Scorpion vs Victor Cordaro match
The match of the night some would say is about to happen. Scorpion and Victor Cordaro are going 1 on 1 for the Hardkore Title! Victor Cordaro makes his way to the ring to talk to the UNW fans.
("Cancion Del Mariachi" by Los Lobos rocks the arena and out walks Cordaro, before he can even look up and around the arena, the crowd start a chorus of “Asshole, Asshole…”).
Andy Mace: Now entering the ring, Victor Cordaro!
(He doesn’t look best pleased by the crowds reaction, so he makes a quick walk down to the ring, slides in, and gets given a mic, and tries to shut the crowd up.)
Victor Cordaro: Whoa, whoa, whoa. Who do you think your calling an asshole huh? I must be something special, don’t forget I have this Hardkore Title match tonight, that I will win for sure. It is against that Scorpion, he doesn’t even deserve that name, because his sting is weaker than one of a bee. So…
(Before he can continue "Perseverance" by Hatebreed hits the arena, and the crowd are ecstatic to see Scorpion. He walks down the ramp, taunting for the crowd. He slides into the ring, glares and smiles at his opponent for tonight, Victor Cordaro, and grabs a mic.)
Kurt Ross: Oh no, things are boiling over here, Merle!
Merle Haggard Jr: Which one will crack first, someone’s going to throw a punch.
Scorpion: Why do you seem so sure that you think my "sting is weaker than one of a bee"? Why don’t you just wait until tonight, and we will see how weak my sting is. You shouldn’t be sure about something that you have no right to be. I will gladly kick your ass tonight…in fact…why not right now?
(Scorpion takes the mic, and hits Victor Cordaro with it. A cheap shot to the head. "Perseverance" by Hatebreed hits once more, and the crowd start to chant Scorpion's name.)
Kurt Ross: Scorpion throws the first blow of many between these two men tonight, what a night we are in store for.
-----------------------------------
Match 3 Scorpion vs Victor Cordaro: UNW Hardkore Title
("Cancion Del Mariachi" by Los Lobos rocks the arena and out walks Cordaro. He begins to taunt the crowd, but he shows some signs of the cheap shot from Scorpion earlier in the night. Once again though, the crowd show their appreciation for him with another chorus of “Asshole, asshole…” .Cordaro again doesn’t like this, and he shouts things at the crowd, but they just keep on coming back with that asshole chant.)
Andy Mace: Making his way to the ring Weighing in at 210 lbs, El Mariachi, Victor Cordaro!
(He continues to taunt and shout trash at the crowd as the music begins to fade out, and the music of Scorpion comes in. "Perseverance" by Hatebreed, echoes around the arena, and out comes Scorpion wheeling down weapons galore in a shopping cart.)
Andy Mace: Now entering the ring, weighing in at 240 lbs, he is one half of the UNW Tag Team Champions, Scorpion!
(The ref takes the UNW Hardkore title and raises it above his head, and then hands it to the ring announcer Andy Mace outside of the ring.)
Kurt Ross: This match is serious, it is for the gold, will it be another title for Scorpion or will it be a title for Cordaro, lets see when we return!
(The cameras fade out for a short commercial break. When they face back, the bell has just been rung.)
(The ref rings the bell as Scorp takes out a 2 x 4 from the shopping cart and Victor Cordaro slides out the ring. Cordaro meets a stinging shot from Scorpion with that 2 x 4, right to the head. Scorpion seems to have taken charge already with that, and he continues to stomp down on Cordaro. Scorpion wheels the shopping cart away from Cordaro, and waits for him to rise. Cordaro grabs the steel steps to help himself up, but he makes the mistake of having his back turned to Scorp. Scorpion runs at Cordaro with the trolley but he dodges it, and Scorpion slams the shopping cart right into the steel steps, hurting the wrists and arms of Scorpion. Cordaro takes advantage of this, and goes for a quick roll up. 1, 2… Scorpion kicks out and manages to rise quite quickly and hit Cordaro with a dropkick.)
Kurt Ross: That was a sharp kick there from Scorpion, Cordaro though takes a lot to keep down, and this match will be a real brawl til one of them is hurt badly!
Merle Haggard Jr: These two men do not get along, and I don’t think they ever will, Scorpion couldn’t wait earlier to get a punch in on him.
(Scorpion fails to take advantage of this, and he rolls into the ring to try and gain a breather quickly. Victor Cordaro grabs a chair from underneath the ring, and slides it in, along with himself. Scorpion sees him, and Cordaro drops the chair. They both lock up, and Scorpion hits the suplex with vengeance. Scorpion slides out the ring, he goes and grabs the Hardkore Title, and raises it above his head before sliding in the ring, and waiting to hit Cordaro in the head with it. Before he can do that, Billy Backus comes down, grabs the 2 x 4, and slides into the ring, and hits Scorp round the back of the head with it. Backus slides back out, and Cordaro covers Scorp for the pin. The ref counts, 1, 2… but Scorp isn’t giving up on the title.)
Kurt Ross: Ouch that would have been a screwjob there, but Scorpion isn’t going to give up that easily, he wants this title way too bad!
Merle Haggard Jr: Look at the expression on Cordaro and Backus's
faces!
(CobrA suddenly runs down, and he floors Backus with a forearm smash to the back of the head.)
Merle Haggard Jr: Is this a replay of the North American title tournament match that we saw earlier? The match is out of control!
(CobrA takes out Backus with a 2 x 4 shot to the head, slides into the ring, and takes out his anger on Cordaro with a crushing blow to the head with that 2 x 4 again. Scorp rolls over to get the pin, 1…2… but there is a kick out from Cordaro this time!)
Kurt Ross: A near screwjob on the part of the tag team champions, ScorpbrA!
(CobrA is keeping Backus at bay now, and is stomping on him on the outside. Scorp goes and picks up the chair that was slid into the ring by Cordaro earlier in the bout. He hammers Cordaro with it as he gets up, flooring him again. He goes for the pin, hooking the leg, 1, 2, 3!)
Kurt Ross: We have a new champion!
Merle Haggard Jr: Scorpion is the new UNW Hardkore Champion!
(Scorpion's music hits, and he grabs his title and rolls out the ring. Just as Cobra and Scorpion are about to turn and walk through the curtains, Cordaro and Backus start shouting at them. They speak quietly one second, and then Backus says this.)
Backus: Hey, next week, you 2, vs us 2. In a tag team match!
Cobra: See you next week guys, where it will be a win for us, guaranteed!
Backus: That doesn’t mean much from you...does it, CobrA?
(The cameras fade out as ScorpbrA walk through the curtains.)

An interesting look at segments of a lost episode of UNW HighStakes. I may be posting more events from that era if and when I find them up until the posting of the new HighStakes episode in the next few months.
Long overdue thanks go out to the original text-era member who wrote this (though I can't quite remember which one at the moment, lol...as this was a long tome ago.)

Match 4: Billy Backus vs. CobrA

"My Town" by Montgomery Gentry, Backus walks down the ramp, slides into the ring, and taunts for the crowd.
