For UNW Asphyxiation 2003, I was planning on writing out a "pre-show" segment called "UNW ASPHYXIATION LIVE" that would be posted the day before the show to get members of the league excited for what would be in store. As you all know, the event never happened, so the pre-show went into storage...until now. For those of you who need an explanation on characters or angles, I'll post them immediately after the "show"...
(We open up to a black screen as, quickly, the UNW logo zooms in slowly into the main frame of the picture from the center of the screen. It then fades out into black once again. After about a second of black-screen, we fade in to the word “PRESENTS” in white lettering. It covers up the whole middle of the frame. That fades out. Now, after another second, a bass solo in the song “Frantic” plays…as the UNW Asphyxiation 2003 logo fades in…and then, drums and guitars go in, as the word LIVE in big red letters appears from under it. In the background, a picture of !nterogative snarling comes up. Then, just as James Hetfield’s vocals start to come in, the frame shatters and we see tons of fans in a fenced off area of the Erie County Fairgrounds, Slade Park, from an aerial perspective. The fans are packed into a small area which surrounds a large, circular stage. “Frantic” plays from speakers on the stage, which makes the fans cheer, as they know they are on camera. We pan around the crowd, who are reaching over the safety rails. The stage is in the middle of the park, and it is a plain circle with a section of stairs cut into it. The UNW Asphyxiation logo is plastered onto the stage, using a decal. Two men stand on the stage, a man with a microphone and a cameraman. We still pan around, as the fans are enjoying the weather out here today at the Fairgrounds. After about forty-five seconds of panning the 100+ fans crammed into the park, we now cut to the camera feed from the stage. On the stage, Andy Mace faces the camera and “Frantic” fades out from the speakers. The fans start to cheer and some fans even chant Andy Mace’s name, as Andy Mace prepares to give an introduction to the show. Mace holds the microphone up to his face and begins to start.)
Andy Mace - Hello, and welcome, fans, to Slade Park at the Erie County Fairgrounds in Hamburg, New York. We are here today to air the first ever Pay-Per-View news show, UNW Asphyxiation Live. Now, please welcome your first host. From Muskogee, Oklahoma, USA,…
(Some fans begin to cheer as Andy Mace continues.)
Andy Mace - …please welcome, UNW Color Commentator…”The Poet of the Common Man”…
(The fans’ cheers are beginning to crescendo.)
Andy Mace - …MERLE HAGGARD JUNIOR!!!!
(Now, on the speakers, “Ramblin’ Fever” by Merle Haggard begins to play. The fans are going crazy around the stage as Merle Haggard Jr. begins to emerge from a gazebo right near the park. He steps down the gazebo and steps through an “aisle” constructed by dividing two fan sections. He steps though the makeshift aisle, slapping his fans’ hands on both sides of it. He wears a brown cowboy hat, a black Bull Rider’s shirt, black slacks, black cowboy boots, and sunglasses. He walks up the steps cut out of the stage and shakes hands with Andy Mace. After he shakes hands with Mace, he looks around at the fans that are on the northern side of the park and gives the thumbs up to them. Now, Merle gets handed a microphone by UNW Timekeeper Mike Hansonki, who is standing on the grass near the stage. “Ramblin’ Fever” stifles, as Andy Mace prepares to introduce the next host of the program. Merle Haggard Jr. stands to the right of Mace as Andy begins to introduce the second host to the program.)
Andy Mace - Now, fans, here is your second host. He is the man who will face Wes Tomerka in the UNW North American Championship Finals…He is the hottest prospect in E-Wrestling today…and he is a proud Texan!
(The fans begin to cheer, almost drowning out Andy Mace’s voice.)
Andy Mace - Please welcome…The High Life Man…BILLY BACKUS!!!
(We cut back to the gazebo, as “My Town” by Montgomery Gentry blasts from the speakers on the stage. Now, Backus emerges from the gazebo with three bottles of Miller High Life in his hands. He wears a black cowboy hat with the word “TEXAS” on it, he wears a Chad Hutchinson Dallas Cowboys jersey, along with blue jeans and brown cowboy boots. As he walks up the steps of the stage, the words of his theme come in.)
”COME SUNDAY MORNIN’ SERVICE AT THE CHURCH OF CHRIST,
THERE AIN’T AN EMPTY SEAT TO BE FOUND…
…AND THIS IS MY TOWN.”
(The fans cheer very loudly as Backus walks up onto the stage. He gives a bottle of High Life to Merle Haggard Junior, one to Andy Mace, and one to Mike Hansonki on the grass as Hansonki gives him a microphone in exchange. Now, Andy Mace speaks up once again as “My Town” fades out.)
Andy Mace - Fans, welcome to…ASPHYXIATION LIVE!!!!!!!!
(Andy Mace’s statement gets a huge reaction from the crowd around the stage. After that, Andy walks off of the stage, as three chairs are pushed onto the stage by crew members. A portion of “Frantic” by Metallica plays as the hosts take their seats. Merle Haggard Jr. sits in the middle-most chair, and Billy Backus sits in the chair on the far left. The guest’s seat is obviously the one on the far right. Now, two members of the crew hurriedly push a large coffee table up onto the stage for the guests to put their beers and their other items on. Now, as this coffee table is put down onto the stage. Merle puts his cowboy hat down onto it, as well as his unopened bottle of Miller High Life. “Frantic” fades out, as the fans cheer, waiting for the first guest of the show. Merle prepares to speak the first words of Asphyxiation Live, as Billy Backus gets thrown a can of Miller High Life from Mike Hansonki, who is still standing near the stage, on the grass.)
Merle Haggard Jr. - Billy, look at the crowd that has assembled here on a perfect summer day in Hamburg, New York!
(The fans cheer at Merle’s comment as Backus replies.)
Billy Backus - I know, Merle. Ya’ see, back in Texas, the weather was always like this. But, I guess New York is also making me want to drink some more High Life to keep cool out here.
(Merle laughs, as he prepares to talk about Asphyxiation.)
Merle Haggard Jr. - Well, Billy, it’s good to talk with someone who isn’t Kurt Ross once in a while. We’re approaching Asphyxiation, and it looks like it’s gonna be a big Pay-Per-View. Our first guest is one of the men who will square off in a huge match. In all honesty, I love this man's wrestling skills. Sorry, Billy, but he is also the man who demolished you on HighStakes two weeks back…
Billy Backus - No…not him.
Merle Haggard Jr. - Oh yeah, it’s him. Please welcome…ADRENALIN! Come out here!
(“In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” by Iron Butterfly hits on the P.A. system of the stage, as the fans boo. Now, stepping out of the gazebo is Adrenalin, who is wearing a CCCP Hockey Jersey and black jean shorts. He is wearing sunglasses, as well. Now, Adrenalin steps out of the gazebo, and walks down the makeshift aisle, as the fans jeer him. As he saunters down the aisle, he stares at the fans to the left and to the right of the aisle, sneering. Mike Hansonki hands him a microphone as he steps up onto the stage. He flexes his muscles to the fans, but they boo him loudly, showing him their disapproval of him showing up at Asphyxiation Live. Now, “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” fades out as Adrenalin takes a seat and gets handed a High Life by Billy Backus.)
Billy Backus - Adrenalin, ya’ care for a High Life?
Adrenalin - High Life? Get me some real alcohol. VODKA!
Billy Backus - The only thing a High Life Man drinks is BEER.
Adrenalin - Then, I guess I'm not a High Life Man.
Billy Backus - You little piece of sh*t, nobody…and I mean nobody…gets interviewed by me without a can a' beer in their hand.
Adrenalin -What did you call me, Pig? If you want, I'll do what I did to you on HighStakes again.
Merle Haggard Jr. - OK...back on topic, guys. Adrenalin, tomorrow night, you face off against Fusion in what seems to be your last rematch together. What will be your strategies going into this match?
Adrenalin - Merle, if I were to tell you, and the UNW fans, it would surely get out to Fusion and I don't want Fusion exactly to know what I'm doing. Sure, I could put out some false information, but then again, what good will that do?
Merle Haggard Jr. - I see…
And now, for an explanation:
-Billy Backus was a new face in the UNW at the time. He, incidentally, was trained and managed by Merle Haggard Junior, who at that time was a UNW announcer. It almost was a Jim Ross/Dr. Death Steve Williams sort of deal with those two. Backus didn't come back for the YouTube era because I didn't think he would fit in properly, but you never know.
-HighStakes was our "televised" event at the time. It was posted weekly on Revolution Studios, a big e-fed community that I joined around 2003.
-Adrenalin, who was feuding with Fusion at the time, was a Russian powerhouse. Think of him as Aleksandar Kuleshov meets Brock Lesnar. In other words, he's like Vladimir Kozlov, just not as stiff in the ring.
