This is to announce that the URWL will be moving to a high defintion format sooner or later...just not right away. The move to high definition video capture is a big move and a bigger investment for me, as I will not only have to buy a HD capture device (going with a Blackmagic Intensity internal PCI Express card for Mac Pro instead of the more conventional Hauppauge HD-PVR) but also a HD "preview monitor" to make the recording process easier. It will be an incremental process to turn my current setup into a profssional rig of sorts...hell, it's probably going to take me around 600-700 dollars to do all of this, so why not?
The first step, which will take place before major work begins on HighStakes in the next few weeks or so, is upgrading the Mac's RAM, which I found out really slowed the editing process of UA and actually led to some crappy cuts and do-overs. I had multiple programs open at once (mainly AE and Premiere), so the stock 3 gigabytes that shipped with the Mac Pro led to a chugging editing process. 16 GB should do the trick, even though the processor can support up to 32 (but there's no way I'm paying over 500 dollars for it).
The next few HighStakes and Roughness shows will likely be the last produced in SD, but don't expect the high-def stuff until later on down the line. As I've said, it's a two part process: both the Blackmagic card and a smaller 1080P TV need to be purchased for it to happen. If I had to put a ballpark figure out there, I'd say that Discontent '11 just may be the first high definition show...but as seen in the past, don't quite hold me to that yet.
Complicated thing is making a ton of new graphics in the new dimensions, but that shouldn't be too hard - I'll be doing that every show anyway. It's all a matter of how much hard drive space and how much the new memory can make a difference. HD video, especially uncompressed HD video, takes up a lot of space and resources. I've worked with HDV video already (university project) but the URWL may prove to be a more intensive barometer of just how far I can push the hardware.
Exciting things await down the road, and hopefully we'll be able to make the "jump" seamlessly and cohesively.
