(ORCHARD PARK, NY): After Unrivaled Ambition left the air, undefeated Wrestler of the Year Akina was diagnosed with a broken leg and will be out indefinitely, sources out of Buffalo reported. The 6'9" Hardkore Champion was injured during a post-match sneak attack by former URWL HighFlyer Champion Cory Jones, during which Jones applied a leg lock to Akina and refused to break the vicious hold until Akina reeled due to injury.
"Who does Cory think he is?" asked professional wrestling blogger Kelvin Spears in his review of Unrivaled Ambition. "He's so blinded by this hypocritical 'Legitimate Wrestling' mantra that he's willing to take his obvious jealousy of Akina out for the world to see. It's that simple."
URWL Arena "season ticket holder" Tom Cundey wasn't surprised. "Cory was humiliated in Episode 9 by Scorpion and Akina, so this was his next logical step. His actions were justified and it was simply a case of the better wrestler getting the upper hand on guys that ruined a big night of his career."
The URWL Board of Directors stunningly agreed with Cundey's sentiment, turning down a request by URWL CEO Goldash for the former CobrA's suspension. Goldash's sentiments were made public during the airing of Unrivaled Ambition. However, the Board of Directors saw no harm in Jones's actions, unanimously turning down the CEO's demand.
"I can't say I'm very happy with the result," Goldash stated in a press interview after the hearing. "Cory Jones sent a man to the hospital in a premeditated, jealous attack. Neither Akina nor Scorpion deserved what happened to them at Unrivaled Ambition, and it's a shame that Jones is still allowed to participate in URWL events after such a display of cowardice." Rumors outside of URWL H.Q. point to the Board's decision as a matter of comparison; they apparently felt attacks by wrestlers like !nterogative were harsher, but were never brought forth to debate.
A recent interview with Cory Jones on "dirt sheet" website CAWZone.info reveals another side to the debate. "These people in the front office don't raise their voices when Akina and Scorpion mutilate people with weapons, they don't think twice," Jones stated. "But after I defeated Akina with my body and my brain, the only weapons I will ever use...they somehow raise a fuss? Some company I wrestle in. They're afraid of what may happen when the garbage of the old guard is replaced by legitimate wrestling."
When asked about his emphasis on the word 'defeated', Jones didn't beat around the bush. "Well, it's true, isn't it? Goldash himself, the man who brought this whole mess up in the first place, said he never saw Akina so agonized in his broadcast career. Forget about win-loss records. Watch my intervention again and tell me I ended his career. Out of many that came before me, I am the first man to defeat Akina. His streak is over, his domination is over and his way of wrestling is over. I did everyone a favor by taking out the trash at Unrivaled Ambition. And with the Hardkore Champion injured and probably crying his eyes out in a rotting, third-rate and overflowing Buffalo hospital, I have effectively killed the filth you call 'hardcore'. The URWL Board of Directors only drove home that fact when they sided with me."
Cory Jones is currently not booked on the premiere episode of HighStakes but is likely to make an appearance on the subsequent show, the eventual debut of URWL Roughness in Toronto, Ontario.
