REY MYSTERIO COMMENTS ON WWE WELLNESS SUSPENSION, SAYS COMPANY 'HANDLED THE SITUATION BADLY' By Mike Johnson on 2009-08-30 07:23:18
WWE Intercontinental champion Rey Mysterio claimed he was suspended after failing to provide a proper prescription for painkillers he was taking for arm and knee issues.
In an interview with The Record in Mexico (click here for a translated version of the interview), Mysterio claims he was suspended for 30 days despite only having 24 hours to provide the prescription. Mysterio claimed he was away for three weeks on vacation and went overseas to promote Summerslam, then returned to find out about the request from Dr. Black of Aegis Science, which oversees the WWE's Wellness Policy.
Due to his schedule, Mysterio claims he asked his doctor, David Ciao of San Diego, to clarify that Mysterio's prescription was legitimate, only to learn he was being suspended by World Wrestling Entertainment.
Mysterio commented that the company didn't wait to get the call from his doctor and in the end, after receiving the call, the suspension stands. Mysterio claimed that on a level of 1 to 100 of testing positive for a substance via the WWE Wellness Testing, "I left with two percent" (over the allowed levels).
As we noted on Friday in the PWInsider.com Elite section, Mysterio had been telling those close to him that he had been working despite a lot of nagging, constant pain in his knees stemming from his most recent injury suffered a few months back while wrestling Shelton Benjamin for an episode of WWE Superstars.
Mysterio is slated to appear at this Tuesday's Smackdown taping and one would expect he would drop the IC title at that point. He had been scheduled to face Dolph Ziggler at the WWE Breaking Point PPV. He will instead be suspended from 9/2 to 10/2, so the earliest he could return would be 10/4 WWE Hell in A Cell PPV in Newark, NJ or the Trenton, NJ Smackdown taping on 10/6.
Mysterio claimed to The Record that "the situation was handled badly" and also claimed he would comment on the suspension on his "official website", although the link to that website now leads to WWE's official Mysterio page on their roster.
